                                                      Common Challenges in the Application of Geomembrane


High salt content corrosion 

The high concentrations of sulfates and chlorides in the brine of salt lakes will accelerate the aging of HDPE membranes. Long-term immersion can cause local swelling or a decline in chemical stability. 

 Acidic/Alkaline Medium Erosion 

The acidic wastewater from mines (with a pH value less than 3) or the alkaline environment of salt lakes cause the micropores of the membrane material to expand and the additives to precipitate, thereby reducing its flexibility and water resistance. 

Insufficient puncture resistance 

The salt crystals at the bottom of the salt lake are sharp, and the waste rock from the mines has many sharp edges. The HDPE membrane (especially when the thickness is less than 1.5mm) is prone to being punctured, and therefore, a composite geotextile or an additional protective layer is required.
